This page will give you step by step instructions on how to install a transmission oil cooler for your 4th gen 4L60E (although the instructions will be pretty much universal to most auto transmissions I'm sure). I ended up doing my transmission oil cooler install a little earlier than expected. I was going to wait until I installed my Vigilante 2800 stall converter but a a week prior to the install the clutch in my 96 SS went out. This got me thinking and a little paranoid about drive train related problems. Since I was taking my Vortech supercharged A4 94Z on a 2000 mile round trip in less than a week, I wanted to do everything possible to keep from being stranded out in the middle of nowhere and missing the www.f-body.org national event in Memphis TN (which was a blast!). I talked around a bit and was told to go with the biggest cooler I could get my hands on. Heat KILLS the transmission and these coolers really do help... especially on a car with an aftermarket high stall converter. My buddy, John, hooked me up with a Hayden Transaver Transmission Oil Cooler part number 1405. This is for extra heavy duty driving. Class "A" motor homes, large travel trailers, 5th wheel trailers, etc. It has a gvw of 26,000 lbs. So, I figured it should work on my little Camaro pretty good! There is a little blurb on the box I thought was interesting... "With each 20 degree drop in operating temperature, your oil and equipment life doubles. By reducing your transmission oil temperature as much as 60 degrees, a Hayden transmission oil cooler can greatly extend the life of your transmission." This is actually a very easy procedure as you'll see so don't think you need tons of mechanical experience to install one of these coolers :) |
