The 1000' Burnout!

This is longest and most smoke producing burnout I have ever seen.  I didn't time it but it lasted for probably 2 to 3 minutes.   The tire smoke billowed 50 to 75' above the large building this was done next to... it looked like the entire structure was on fire when viewed from about 1/4 mile away!   I only regret there was no video camera there to capture this incredible stupidity and waste of perfectly good tires :-)

All you'll see here is the aftermath.  I'd also like to point out right now that even though this act of stupidity was performed with my 450 hp 1996SS Z28 Camaro, I was not the driver ;)  That guy could still get in trouble!!!  I met the guy who performed this act that day and I haven't seen him since.  He was a nice guy just like me and it's probably a good thing I don't remember his name or even what state he lives in because I'm not sure if the cops would still be looking for him or not ;)

The burnout was pictured below is one continuos burnout with a few turns done in the middle so as to be able to continue on with the tire shredding.  Because the pics weren't always taken from the same direction as the burnout, I'll include arrows so it is easier to follow :) The burnout was performed with an M6 in 2nd gear while holding a steady 6000 rpm.  The tires were perfectly good Dunlop SP8000 315/35/17 series tires mounted on 11" ZR1 style wheels.   You'll see some pics at the bottom of what this burnout did to my wheels... I thought they were ruined.

This is the starting point.  There were actually two cars involved in doing a few burnouts this night.  They were all impressive but only one "continued" for the duration.

Started at the light pole and coming down a little further.

Down the first stretch and starting the corner :)

Going through the corner now!

tires09.JPG (23300 bytes)
First turn done... yep, got a little close to the edge ;)

tires06.JPG (24019 bytes)
Coming down the back stretch!

tires10.JPG (28644 bytes)
More of the back stretch and heading to the "S" turn!   The row of trees way down there is the highway... that's where we're headed :)

tires02.JPG (22915 bytes)
Heading into the "S" turn... nice smooth sweep, eh?

tires36.JPG (24032 bytes)
Middle of the "S" turn.

tires35.JPG (23934 bytes)
Making the final bend of the "S" turn and heading to the highway!

tires37.JPG (31216 bytes)
And finally the highway!  They get a little lighter towards the white line but do continue out onto the highway towards the left for another 50' or so.   I know the heading of the page is "The 1000' Burnout" but I didn't measure exactly... it might be a little more or a little less but as you can see by the pics, it's a long burnout and 1000' is probably pretty darn close! :)

Now are some pics of the "consequences" of this burnout.  OUCH! :)

It wasn't until the next morning that I realized my nice and shiny chrome wheels were YELLOW!!!  I tried to wash it off with soap and water (that's why the wheels are wet) but it didn't work!

tires39.JPG (36327 bytes)
I started to get a little worried when I couldn't get the yellowish brownish haze off so I whipped out the chrome polish.  Whew, as you can see, the chrome polish worked... just had to polish the wheels now and that was a PITA :)

YIKES!  No, these aren't supposed to be slicks. DOH!  This little stunt parked the SS for about a week while The Tire Rack delivered me a new set.   Whoops.

tires42.JPG (23651 bytes)
These were chunks of rubber that had just FALLEN OFF the rear quarter panel as the car sat during the night. LOL!

tires41.JPG (31869 bytes)
It's a good thing that back stretch wasn't a little longer.  Not sure how much more abuse these could have taken.  Another 50' and a blowout and I would have been paying for a lot more than just tires!

tires43.JPG (29407 bytes)
A little rubber collected on the backside.

tires44.JPG (35805 bytes)
And just a "little" rubber collected on the FRONT side too!

Working on getting the smoke haze (I guess that's what this is?) off the wheels.  I've done little burnouts before but never have I seen anything like this before???  There was a ton of smoke though ;)

"Brushed" out the fenderwell a little.

New tires have arrived from Tire Rack and loaded up to be mounted and balanced.

tires48.JPG (57078 bytes)
Ahh... new tires mounted on freshly polished chrome wheels.

Yes, Yes, Yes, I know this was extremely stupid and a huge waste of money.  It was a spur of the moment thing and it wasn't intended to completely waste the tires but as sometimes happens, things get a little carried away.   I just wish we would have had a video camera to make this 3 minute $600 stupid stunt a little more worth it :)  Yeah, even discounted these 315 tires are very expensive.  Tack on $40 for mounting and balancing (including a little tip to make sure they were extra careful with the wheels) and it costs about $600 to put rubber back on. DOH!  Was it fun... HELL YES (just watching this of course ;) ) will I do it again anytime soon with GOOD tires... HELL NO!  I gots better things to spend $600 on.  I did get a few aftermath pics and this webpage... had to make this page up to show other fellow f-body buds how one can be so stupid and have so much fun at the same time. LOL!  Oh, and no need to flame me for doing this as I know it was stupid.   But as an FYI, this was done in the middle of the night with nobody around.  I was told by an "informant" that some police officers were in awe while sitting in a parking lot about a mile away.  All they heard for about 5 minutes was the roar of an LS1 (with a loud mouth exhaust) and an LT1 (with SLP exhaust) off in the distance :)   They didn't do anything because they had no idea where it was coming from... you know how sound carries at night when all is quiet?  Whoops :)
